WEEK THREE
JULY 21 - JULY 25
process + program
The goal of this week is to build off the foundation of the previous two weeks to bring lessons learned to the specifics of an architectural project.
asssignment six:: HOME
“A house is machine for living in.” - LeCorbusier
“The home should be a treasure chest of living.” -LeCorbusier
The quotes above from LeCorbusier begin to illustrate the forces and opportunities that shape housing design. Personal versus Practical, Utopian versus Utilitarian, there are a host of forces that characterize an investigation of housing. Through this assignment, students will understand housing design through the redesign of their own dwellings. This intention for critique will provide the students the ammunition needed prior to starting the final project for the program. This analysis is not only a situatinally derived for research, as with each student describing their home, but also a form of research addressing the contemporary idea of dwelling in the twenty first century.
Through this assignment, students will redesign their own dwellings. The project serves as an introduction to the logistics of function and program, bringing design to the very personal program of dwelling. After precisely measuring, and drafting their existing dwellings, students will then develop a conceptual map that lays out their personal ‘treasure chest of living.’ What things, textures, memories, people, places, and experiences go into this treasure chest? Once this personal investigation is completed, these maps will be used as a tool for the students to imagine the transformation of their own dwellings.
This process of transformation will be done through drafted drawings at ½” = 1’-0”. Creating these precise, measured line drawings will foster an understanding of the mechanized sensibility of housing; the size, scale, the logistics of function and program. Keeping with the idea of the layered drawing, students will develop an abstract way to signify how the spirit of their ‘treasure chest’ lives within the transformed dwelling.
These drafted drawings will be balanced with a conceptual model that abstractly looks at the idea of how the ‘treasure chest’ takes form in the redesigned dwelling.
assignment seven:: FINAL PROJECT
